John helps clients in the insurance industry develop and implement comprehensive, strategic solutions for the legal, regulatory and compliance challenges they face.
In more than 30 years of private practice, John has advised property/casualty and life insurance clients on all aspects of their business. His work ranges from formation and licensing, acquisitions, dispositions and restructurings to regulatory compliance, investigations and enforcement actions, including matters in which clients face simultaneous actions in multiple forums – state insurance departments, state attorneys general, SEC and US Department of Justice.
Topics he regularly covers include insurance sales and marketing practices, agent and broker conduct, reinsurance, underwriting and rating. He counsels clients on governance, insurer investments, financial and market conduct examinations and Insurance Holding Company Act compliance. He also drafts, advises and negotiates reinsurance contracts. He is a recognized thought leader in insurance regulation and actively monitors emerging issues in US domestic and international regulation of insurance.
As Deputy Practice Group Leader for the Eversheds Sutherland Global Insurance group, John also leads the US team that covers insurance industry issues at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and insurance industry trade associations.
